Around the World Virtual Soirée
Ever wanted to travel around the world by private jet to visit your bucket list of must-see places? That is what author and lecturer Tim Jepson is lucky enough to do as one of the experts on those National Geographic trips we all lust over in the catalogue. Join Tim on a virtual tour to three of the trip’s cultural highlights, the majestic trio of Easter Island, Petra and the Taj Mahal. Finally, dip into one of several passions Tim picked up while living in Italy for many years—olive oil! Platinum members will receive a care package with our favorite Italian flavors and Dana will follow Tim’s introductory talk with a guided tasting and discussion of several of the world’s finest oils.

TIM JEPSON
Tim Jepson is a British, London-based writer, traveler, and broadcaster. He began his traveling life at the age of 12, exploring the mountains of Britain and Ireland. After graduating from Oxford University with a BA in English Literature and Language, he lived and worked in Italy for six years, writing for a variety of British newspapers and leading high-level expeditions in the country’s remotest corners. His experiences were recorded in a book, Wild Italy, published in the U. S. by the Sierra Club. He has since written more than 20 books, including several titles for National Geographic, and numerous articles for publications worldwide.
He worked as a Travel Editor for London’s Daily Telegraph newspaper, and continues to travel extensively, with a passion for the farthest-flung destinations and the untrammelled cultures of Bhutan, Laos, Tibet, and Myanmar. Italy remains a passion, where he has been a National Geographic Cultural Expert for almost ten years. His most recent work is The British World: An Illustrated Atlas, for National Geographic.

From Tree to Tasting—and How to Find the Best
Around the World Virtual Soirée (4/4)
Sunday, March 28th at 5pm Eastern Time
Olive oil used to be simple: you bought a bottle, any bottle, mixed up a salad dressing or poured some in a pan, and that was it. Not any more. Choosing, using—and tasting—olive oil has become one of the pleasures of eating, with almost as many associated subtleties and variations as choosing and drinking wine. We’ll enjoy a brief introduction to olives, from their 6,000-year-old human history and many hundreds of different varieties to the ways, past and present, in which they have been harvested and turned into oil. Then we’ll look at what makes a good oil—why it is that you want hand-picked, first pressed, and cold-pressed oils, and why as an olive oil you can’t simply be a virgin, you have to be extra virgin.
