Day 10 – Monday, April 7th – Costa del Sol

  • Hotel La Casa del Califa 16 Plaza de España Vejer de la Frontera, AN, 11150 Spain (map)

Explore the village of Vejer de la Fontera. Indulge in fresh seafood delicacies, stroll along windswept dunes, and immerse yourself in the laid-back atmosphere of the quaint fishing village of Zahara de las Atunes, a highlight of Spain’s glorious Spain's "Coast of Light." Later, enjoy a captivating private Andalusian horse show at the Royal Equestrian Center in Chiclana de la Frontera.

Breakfast - At La Califa

Morning - Explore Vejer de la Fonterra

Enjoy a lazy morning at La Califa, taking in the serene atmosphere and beautiful surroundings. Venture out on your own to explore this tiny hilltop village, popping into art galleries and dress shops along the way (Dana may have purchased 10 dresses here…).

Midday - Drive to Zahara de los Atunes

Depart on a 30-min. scenic drive through the mountains and along the coastline to Zahara de los Atunes, renowned for its rich history of tuna fishing, an essential part of the Cádiz coastal economy and culinary heritage. The traditional tuna fishing methods, known as "almadraba," have been practiced for centuries and are celebrated for their sustainability and cultural importance.

Lunch and Beach

Spend the afternoon at leisure, exploring the adorable beach town for excellent shopping (find Dana in the affordable, adorable jewelry shop), lunching at one of the fresh fish restaurants, and relaxing on the beautiful beach of Zahara de los Atunes. Attention WWII history buffs:  At the very southern end of the stunning beach at Playa de Zahara de los Atunes, a strange structure comes into sight. For those familiar with the coast of NW France, or the Channel Islands, it is clearly a WWII German bunker, strange for a country that was supposedly neutral at the time. It was built during that time to protect the Spanish shoreline. Tales abound locally of the Germans who happened to live nearby in Playa de los Alemanes and their wartime and post war activities. Today it is the haunt of local fishermen and not of people spying on the activities of shipping going in and out of the Straits of Gibraltar.

Evening - Depart for Chiclana de la Frontera

A 45-minute drive

Private Equestrian Show & Dinner at Royal Equestrian Center

Enjoy a captivating private Andalusian horse show at the Royal Equestrian Center in Chiclana de la Frontera. Witness various performances of the Pure Spanish Horse including modern dressage showcasing the elegance and agility of Andalusian horse accompanied by traditional flamenco performances.

Afterwards, savor a delicious dinner, featuring local cuisine and fresh ingredients at Restaurante La Herradura, located on the same property, to be served after the show.

Depart for La Califa

25-minute drive back to La Califa, concluding your day with a restful night at the hotel.
